Final Developed Model with Custom Textures

Experiment 1 - Datum

The two studio spaces that I have created here is based on the themes of Spooky(above) and Mechanical(below).

Spooky theme is demonstrated by the webby-like feature hovering above in the center of the design with the additions of rib-caged like architecture engulfing the hallway leading up to the artist studio of Louise Bourgeois. The incorporation of the rib-caged design is to convey the feeling of uncertainty, being in an enclosed space which plays on the perception of safety.

Mechanical theme is portrayed based on the shape of the building itself. The staircase which leads to the studio of Stelarc contributes to the theme itself as it descends in a spiral way just like a mechanical drill.

Section

This was the sketch my design was initially based off, during the modelling process, I discovered and improved my studio for Louise Bourgeois. That is the reason as to why the sections for above studio are not similar, in fact, I have kept the center 'arc' through to my final model.

Progress update

I've decided to change abit of my above ground studio to how it is seen below. I have also created my own version of Louise Bourgeois's Manman spider. The spider will be standing hovering above the spiral stairs which leads down to the underground studio.

Sketchup Progress

Below is a screenshot of my sketchup model so far. I've had a problem creating a perfect screw for my stairs to descend down with it's slope. Will seek help in next class and hopefully someone could find a solution. I followed this tutorial on youtube to create the screw. Problems started to occur at 1min20seconds as i could not scale down the 'screw' perfectly as seen in the tutorial.

As my design below ground would have a 'mechanical' theme. My idea was to create this screw and have my steps descend along its edges.

Objects are everywhere as i haven't finished creating my above ground design but it's on the way! at the moment I'm just create parts that will form the end product. Will attached them once complete.

Final Sketch

As promised in my previous post, here is my finalized sketch that I will be using for my sketchup model.

Initially I was keen on using Ai Wei Wei and Louise Bourgeois as my artist but after thinking it over i chose Louise Bourgeois(Adjective: spooky) and Stelarc(Adjective: mechaical)

I decided to change my artist and also my words that I initially had because they were difficult to relate to architectural designs. My initial words were Ai Wei Wei: Nest(adjective) and Louise Bourgeois: Spider(noun). I had Nest for my above ground design(initially) which i designed few arcs over it to give it some features of a 'nest'.. then ask a classmate for his opinion. He looked then told me it looked like Stelarc's Manman and explain because of the arcs which gave him that impression. I thought to myself and confirmed that it did looked like Manma. Never thought of that, my nest designed looked more like Louise Bourgeois's artwork. I changed Louise to above ground then replace below ground with Stelarc.
